Peanut Butter Wolf: The man who threw the first stone. The owner of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf, is one of the most visionary figures in the music industry today. Born as Chris Manak in San Jose, California, in 1969, Peanut Butter Wolf started his career as a DJ and producer in the late 80s and early 90s. In 1996, he founded Stones Throw Records, which has since become one of the most cutting-edge and influential record labels in the world. With a focus on left-field hip hop, experimental electronic music, and everything in between, Stones Throw has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in contemporary music. What sets Peanut Butter Wolf apart from other label owners is his willingness to take risks and follow his instincts, even when they go against the prevailing trends. He has never been afraid to sign unconventional artists and release unconventional projects, and this has earned him a devoted fan base and critical acclaim. One of the key factors in Peanut Butter Wolf’s success is his deep love and knowledge of music. He grew up listening to everything from classic soul and funk to punk rock and new wave, and this eclectic taste is reflected in the wide-ranging roster of artists on Stones Throw. Moreover, as a DJ, Peanut Butter Wolf has a keen ear for beats and rhythms, and he has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to new sounds and styles. He has been instrumental in popularizing genres like abstract hip hop, lo-fi, and electronic funk, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless contemporary artists. Another factor that makes Peanut Butter Wolf so important is his commitment to community and collaboration. He has worked with countless artists over the years, both on his label and beyond, and he has consistently championed the work of musicians who might otherwise go overlooked. Moreover, he has always been a staunch advocate for the independent music scene, and has helped to create a vibrant network of artists, producers, and DJs who are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in contemporary music. Ultimately, the legacy of Peanut Butter Wolf and Stones Throw Records is about much more than just music. It is about the power of community, the importance of creativity, and the value of taking risks and following your dreams. #TTTP EP5 “PREFUSE 73”
Prefuse 73: Dope From All Angles Prefuse 73 is an experimental hip hop and electronic music project founded by Guillermo Scott Herren, an American electronic musician from Atlanta, Georgia. He is known for his innovative use of samples, intricate beats, and glitchy soundscapes that push the boundaries of conventional electronic music. Since his debut album “Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives” in 2001, Prefuse 73 has released over a dozen studio albums, including collaborations with other artists such as The Books and Oneohtrix Point Never. His work has received critical acclaim and has been praised for its experimental and original take on electronic music. One of the defining characteristics of Prefuse 73’s music is his use of disjointed beats and abstract sound structures that create a sense of glitchy chaos. He often layers multiple samples and textures over each other, creating a dense and complex sound; however, at the same time, his music is incredibly rhythmic and groovy, with beats that will make you want to hit the dance floor. In addition to his innovative sound design, Prefuse 73 is also notable for his commitment to collaboration and experimentation. He has worked with a variety of different musicians from diverse backgrounds, resulting in eclectic and unpredictable albums that are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in electronic music. Some standout albums from Prefuse 73’s discography include “One Word Extinguisher” (2003), “Surrounded by Silence” (2005), and “The Only She Chapters” (2011). These albums showcase his unique approach to sampling and beatmaking, as well as his ability to incorporate live instrumentation and vocal performances into his music. In conclusion, Prefuse 73 is a highly innovative and influential electronic musician who has contributed significantly to the development of experimental hip hop and electronic music. His music is complex and groovy, yet challenging and enjoyable. If you’re a fan of creative and boundary-pushing electronic music, then Prefuse 73 is definitely an artist worth checking out.

#TTTP EP4 ” ILLA-J”
Illa-J: The Underrated Younger Brother of J-Dilla The world-renowned J-Dilla, one of the best hip-hop producers and beat-makers, sadly passed away in 2006 after a long battle with lupus. However, his legacy still thrives through his music, which continues to influence the hip-hop culture. Although J-Dilla’s music continues to inspire many, there’s another artist whose talent and musical contribution are often underrated– his younger brother, John Yancey, also known as Illa-J. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1986, Illa-J grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Beverly Yancey, was a jazz bassist, and his mother, Maureen Yancey, was a former opera singer. As a child, he was exposed to different genres of music, and he started playing the piano at the age of 7. However, it wasn’t until Illa-J turned 16 and his brother J-Dilla gave him his first MPC that he realized his talent for beat-making. Illa-J’s music is a combination of different genres, like soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop. His sound is a reflection of his musical upbringing, and he credits his family for his love of music. In an interview with Complex, he said, “My family is super musical, and it wasn’t just one kind of music. It could be classical, folk, jazz, or soul. There were times when I would be in the car with my dad, listening to Coltrane, and then we’d come back home, and he would show me how to play a funk bassline.” Illa-J’s style is unique and distinct from his brother’s, but his music still carries J-Dilla’s influence. In 2007, Illa-J released his first album titled “Yancey Boys,” which featured J-Dilla’s unreleased beats. The album received critical acclaim and introduced Illa-J’s music to a wider audience. Since then, he has released several albums, including “Home” and “John Yancey,” which showcase his growth as an artist. Aside from being a musician, Illa-J is also a visual artist. He creates album covers, tour posters, and other visual elements for his music. His creativity extends beyond music, and he sees his art and music as interconnected. He said in an interview with Passion of the Weiss, “I think of it as a whole. I never separate the visual from the musical. It always goes hand in hand.” In conclusion, Illa-J’s musical prowess and artistic creativity are often overshadowed by his brother’s success. However, his music deserves recognition, and he should be appreciated for his contribution to hip-hop culture. He has a unique sound and style that sets him apart from other artists, and his music is worth listening to. So, let’s give Illa-J the appreciation he deserves, and let his music inspire us, just as J-Dilla’s music has for many years.
